The topics raised in this book cover the relation, in a broad sense, between Friedrich Nietzsche’s thought and visual arts. This book presents four studies which analyze artistic phenomena from different perspectives and over a long time span. The first part analyzes the Nietzschean ekphrases of Raphael’s paintings, the theory of painting presented in The Birth o f Tragedy as well as the reception of this thought which is reflected in the works of the American abstractionist Mark Rothko. The second part discusses the presence of visual motifs in Nietzsche’s writings as well as the relationship between his life and art. This book culminates in a study of this philosopher’s portrait photographs which highlights the temporal dimensions of imagery derived from Nietzsche’s writings.
