Rethinking architecture. Contemporary perspectives of architectural studies and its histories
Artium Quaestiones concentrates on theoretical and methodological problems issues inof art history. Thesey usually have been discussed in our journal primarily with reference to visuality, image science/image studies (Bildwissenschaft) or the issues related tof visual media. This timeNow, without not giving up on our interest in new scholarly tendencies and theoretical studies, we have decided to take have a closer look at new methods and theories of studying architecture and their histories. We invite scholars to consider to what extent cultural/theoretical turns in the humanities, which have been assimilated by art history since the 1970s, have also been influential in the field of architectural studies. We would like to see how these methodological/theoretical perspectives, practisced for several decades now, stimulate the rethinking of diverse various old problems of history of architecture and the formulating of new research questions and objectives. The theme of the next issue refers to numerous anthologies devoted to philosophy and historiography of architecture, for instance Rethinking Architecture: A Reader in Cultural Theory (1997) or Rethinking Architectural Historiography (2006). We hope that the new attempt at “rethinking” these questions will specify the position of architecture and the possibilities of studying it within the history of art. We invite scholars to submit article proposals without imposing any chronological or geographical limitations. However, we are particularly interested in the following issues:
- Architecture as an image (architecture in studies on visual culture studies, ‘un-built’ architecture)
- Between material structure and senses (architecture and “thing studies”, new materialism and the sensorial turn)
- Functions of architecture and practices of the everyday (architecture and cultural studies of everyday life)
- Architecture and social art histories (architecture in the face of social stratification, the “ludic turn”, gender politics)
- Architectural geographies and globalization (architecture and regional and postcolonial/decolonial studies)
- Historiography of architecture (architecture and forms of historical narratives)
